Options in numbers: the earnings straddle, puts and the wheel

Every hour the straddle radar recalculates how big a move the market is pricing into an earnings report and how often it has been wrong before. The team journals show every sold put and every wheel cycle: premium, collateral, annualized return and outcome.

  • About 125 earnings reports on the radar each week
  • The verdict is recalculated every hour
  • The team’s real trades, losing ones included

Look into the report before it comes out

Before every quarterly earnings report the options market puts a price on the expected move. The radar shows where that price is too low.

  1. You buy a call and a put at the same strike shortly before the report. If the stock then moves further than the market priced in, in either direction, the trade is profitable. If the move turns out to be small, you lose part of the premium.

How the team actually trades options

Not textbook theory but records of the founder’s real trades. The journals are filled in automatically from the trade history.

  1. For each contract you can see the premium received, the amount of collateral, how many days the trade was open, the annualized return on collateral and the status: open, closed, expired or assigned.

Three strategies

What is behind each tool

A short look at the logic of the strategies the team uses with its own money.

The earnings straddle

A bet on the size of the move, not on its direction. It works when the market has underestimated the reaction to the report.

  • The radar covers reports 14 days ahead
  • Up to 25 companies a day, only stocks with options
  • Verdicts are recalculated every hour
  • Track record: what the radar said and how it turned out

Selling cash-secured puts

You receive a premium for being willing to buy a stock below the market price. Either you keep the premium, or you buy a stock you wanted anyway.

  • Premium and collateral for each contract
  • Annualized return on collateral
  • Statuses: open, closed, expired, assigned
  • Share of profitable trades and the overall result

The wheel

The next step after selling puts: once you have the shares, you sell covered calls on them until the stock is called away. Then the cycle starts again.

  • Each cycle follows a specific lot of shares
  • Every call is tied to its own lot
  • Stock result and premium result shown separately
  • Open and completed cycles

Options in your portfolio

Options trades from your Interactive Brokers statement go into My portfolio together with your stocks.

  • Tracked by contract, with a multiplier of 100
  • Options are a separate class in the allocation
  • Premiums count towards the overall portfolio result

Where the radar’s reports come from

The radar relies on the earnings calendar: every day it picks up the companies that report within the next two weeks.

  • Selected by expected revenue: the largest first
  • Publication time: before the open or after the close
  • An “only my stocks” filter

Options call for caution

Options magnify both profit and loss. A bought straddle can lose its entire premium, and a sold put obliges you to buy the stock even after a sharp fall.

  • The journals show losing trades too
  • The radar’s verdict is an assessment of a setup, not advice
  • The AI analyst will explain the basics of options

What it costs

The options tools are part of the top plan. The team portfolio with its positions is available from a lower plan.

Questions about the options tools

What they do and what they do not do

What exactly does the straddle radar calculate?

For every company that reports within the next 14 days and has options, the radar calculates the straddle premium, the breakevens, the expected move and the implied volatility. It then compares this with eight past earnings reactions and gives a verdict: green, yellow or red.

Can I keep my own journal of puts and wheel cycles?

The journals show the team’s trades: they are filled in automatically from the trade history of the founder’s portfolio. Your own options trades are tracked in My portfolio, where options are a separate asset class.

Is there an options chain, and are there greeks?

No. The radar does not replace your broker’s trading terminal: it calculates ready-made earnings setups and shows how the market priced them in the past. You place the trades themselves with your own broker.

How often is the radar data updated?

Verdicts are recalculated every hour. New reports reach the radar as their date approaches, up to 25 companies a day.

Is this suitable for a beginner?

Options are more complex than stocks, and they are not the place to start. The journals are useful as study material: you can see what the strategies look like in real trades. You can go through the basics with the AI analyst, and trade only once you understand the risks.

Are these trading signals?

No. The radar’s verdict is a quantitative assessment of a setup, and the journals are a record of the team’s trades. Neither is investment advice.
